Private classes SIGN UP

Gyrotonics is an exercise modality that guides users to simultaneously stretch and strengthen muscles and tendons while also articulating and mobilizing the joints. Corresponding breathing patterns are engaged during the performance of the exercises, thereby increasing coordination, endurance and aerobic activity.

Ballet dancer Juliu Horvath, an ethnic Hungarian born in Romania, sought asylum in the U.S.  in the 1960s and developed the Gyrotonic system there, after an injured achilles tendon halted his dancing carreer. He began to practice yoga and developed a system called "Yoga for Dancers," which eventually evolved into Gyrokinesis.

Gyrotonic exercises employ movements found in swimming, yoga, gymnastics, and tai chi using specialized machines developed by Horvath. The system is intended to improve flexibility and balance as well as muscle strength, and to increase overall flexibility and mobility in joints.
